We Checked 551 Local Businesses — 94% Are Invisible to AI Search

More people are asking ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity "who's the best [business] near me?" instead of scrolling Google. When they do, the AI names a few businesses and the conversation moves on. So we wanted a concrete answer to a simple question: if you're a normal local business, do AI assistants ever actually recommend you?

We ran the numbers on 551 real businesses across five US cities and four industries. The short version: 94% of them were never named once. Not by ChatGPT, not by Claude, not by Perplexity — across multiple natural questions a real customer would ask.

The headline numbers

Of the 551 businesses we checked, only 31 (5.6%) were named by any of the three AI engines. The other 520 (94.4%) were completely invisible.

AI engineBusinesses it never namedNamed at all
ChatGPT (GPT‑4o)97.1%16 / 551
Claude (Sonnet 4)96.9%17 / 551
Perplexity (Sonar)97.5%14 / 551
Invisible to all three94.4%

And it held up across every industry we tested:

IndustryBusinesses checkedInvisible to AI
Plumbers6191.8%
Dentists14494.4%
Restaurants16494.5%
Law firms18295.1%

The consistency is the striking part. Different cities, different industries, three different AI systems — and the invisibility rate barely moves off ~94%.

Why this happens: AI search is winner‑take‑all

Here's the important nuance, because it's easy to misread the number. AI assistants aren't failing to find businesses — they're doing something more consequential: they compress the entire market into a tiny, repeating shortlist.

Ask ChatGPT for the best dentists in Chicago and it confidently names about five practices. Ask Perplexity the same thing and it names five — but a different five. Across all 551 businesses and dozens of queries, the engines surfaced only a small, recurring handful, and those handfuls barely overlapped between engines.

That's the real story. Traditional search gives you ten blue links and a second page. AI gives you one answer with a few names in it. If you're not in that answer, there is no page two to be found on — you simply don't exist in the conversation. Visibility in AI is far more concentrated, and far more winner‑take‑all, than it ever was in Google.

So "94% invisible" isn't "AI is broken." It's "AI only ever recommends a few businesses per query — and it almost certainly isn't yours yet."

How we ran it (full methodology)

We deliberately designed this to avoid the obvious trap — only checking businesses that already use an AI‑visibility tool (which would bias the sample toward visible ones).

Honest limitations. This is a snapshot of five cities and four verticals, not the entire economy. We measured three engines, not four — Gemini was excluded for this run because its API quota made a 240‑query sweep impractical, not because of its results. AI answers also shift over time as the models and their sources update. None of that changes the core finding, which was remarkably stable across every cut of the data.

What it means if you run a local business

If you've assumed your Google ranking carries over to AI, this is the wake‑up call: it largely doesn't. The businesses that did get named weren't necessarily the biggest — they were the ones with strong, consistent reputations across the sources AI reads (reviews, directories, and clear, machine‑readable information about what they do and where).

The good news: because so few businesses are visible, the field is wide open. The ones that start now — while the answers are still being shaped — are the ones that get locked into that shortlist. We've written the playbook for exactly this:

FAQ

Does this mean AI never recommends local businesses? No — it recommends a few per query, very confidently. The point is that the shortlist is tiny and concentrated, so the large majority of real businesses never appear. Being in that shortlist is the entire game.

Why were so many businesses invisible? AI engines lean on cross‑web consensus — reviews, directory listings, and clear information about who you are and what you do. Businesses without strong, consistent signals across the sources AI reads simply don't surface, even if they rank on Google Maps.

How can I check my own business? Run a free scan — it asks the AI engines the questions your customers would and shows whether you're named, for which queries, and who appears instead.

Did you test Gemini too? Not in this run — Gemini's API quota made the full sweep impractical. ChatClick's live scan does include Gemini alongside ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
